Obesity is a risk factor for complications from COVID-19

A study conducted by researchers from UMR 1190 (CHU, Inserm, Univ Lille, Pasteur) shows a high frequency of patients suffering from obesity admitted to intensive care following contamination by Sars-CoV-2. This study shows that the severity of the disease increases with the BMI. According to this study, patients with severe obesity (BMI over 30) are seven times more likely to be intubated and ventilated than those of normal weight (BMI less than 25).
Our research confirms that obesity is a risk factor for the severity of Sars-CoV-2, requiring increased attention to preventive measures in susceptible individuals.
